Reaching Out To Those In Need The St. Clare Medical Outreach Project, operated by St. Joseph Medical
Center in Towson, sends a van to Baltimore’s underprivileged
neighborhoods to provide free medical care to those—often
uninsured—individuals in need. Since 1998, St Joe’s has been
providing access to health care, preventive screenings, and health education
for the underserved. For the homeless and other vulnerable populations, this
program is designed to offer access to health care that is often unavailable or
hard to come by. Funding comes from several sources, including
various philanthropies and the hospital’s national parent—the
non-profit health corporation Catholic Health Initiatives. The
“coach” travels from Towson to
Baltimore three days a week, stopping at places such as Hispanic Apostolate in
Fells Point and the Franciscan Center, a soup kitchen and emergency site for
the homeless. Staffing for the program includes a physician, family nurse
practitioner, medical technician, two part-time nurses and volunteers.
