Southern Maryland Hospital's Mobile Van Offers Screenings
Southern Maryland Hospital Center has been providing ultrasound screenings for abdominal aortic aneurysm since 2001 in its Health Express Van. Historically, these
screenings were only conducted in a physician's office or specialty diagnostic center
upon referral. As a result, an aneurysm could go undetected and potentially have fatal consequences. By providing an initial screening, free of charge, early detection helps
doctors treat the aneurysm. In addition to this screening, the van offers the community
blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. The newest service to be introduced is diabetic
foot exams, which assists community members detecting and seeking treatment for diabetes. The van travels throughout the entire Southern Maryland region with particular attention
paid to reaching remote and under-served areas. Anyone visiting one of the scheduled locations can take advantage of the examinations and advice provided by the service's
health care professionals.
